Work Roll Chock Replacement: Bearing Interfaces and Supply Scope

A replacement work roll chock must be specified against its roll, bearing and mill-stand interfaces. The external housing dimensions alone do not establish compatibility. Start with the equipment tag, roll position, approved drawing revision and bearing arrangement.

Distinguish the required component

State whether the enquiry is for a bare chock, a chock with selected internals or a complete assembly. Rolling-mill chocks can use different bearing arrangements, as shown in Castellini's chock manufacturing overview. That does not mean those arrangements are interchangeable in an existing stand.

Identify operator/drive side and work/backup roll position where relevant. Record the bearing designation and approved drawings for seats, covers, seals and lubrication passages rather than ordering from a generic “bearing housing” description.

Engineering insight: used dimensions are not automatically design dimensions

A worn component may no longer represent the required manufacturing fit. If the original drawing is unavailable, qualified personnel should distinguish wear from intended dimensions before a replacement drawing is approved. A photograph or a single bore measurement cannot resolve the entire interface.

The existing OP rolling-mill chocks article introduces the product family. This guide focuses specifically on the replacement enquiry and scope.

Buyer resource: chock scope matrix

For each item, mark new supply / retained / excluded / requires assessment:

  • Chock body and approved material specification.
  • Bearing, seat/liner arrangement and any specified internal components.
  • Covers, seals, retainers and fastening parts.
  • Lubrication passages, fittings and connected equipment.
  • Stand-location interfaces and relevant adjustment/retention features.

Attach drawings, quantities and required inspection/acceptance records. List any proposed deviation for plant-engineering approval.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chock be ordered only by its bearing number?

No. The stand, roll and other assembly interfaces also matter.

Does “complete assembly” always include bearings?

Not necessarily. Ask for an explicit inclusion list.

Can an old chock be reused with a new bearing type?

Only after an approved engineering assessment. Do not assume fit or duty compatibility.
