Flying Shear Procurement: Cutting Duty, Speed and Control Scope
A flying shear enquiry should describe the moving material, cutting duty and control interfaces. A machine offered for one section, speed or cutting condition should not be assumed suitable for another. Request an application-specific technical proposal rather than selecting by the name “flying shear” alone.
Describe the required cuts
State whether the duty is cropping, dividing or another defined operation. Provide material grade, section range, cutting-temperature conditions, speeds and required cut sequence. A Primetals long-rolling application example describes cropping and dividing functions for a specific project; its ratings are not universal values and are not OP specifications.
Engineering insight: mechanical and control scope belong together
Buyers should ask how the proposed machine interfaces with the existing speed/position information and line controls. A mechanical assembly quotation may exclude the drive, sensors, control changes or commissioning needed for the application. Record those boundaries before comparing prices.
Do not use a brochure picture to choose blade clearances, cutting force or operating timing. Those are design and commissioning matters for qualified personnel.
Buyer resource: flying shear RFQ checklist
- Material grade, minimum/maximum section and cutting temperature.
- Line-speed range, cut purpose, lengths and production sequence.
- Existing shear type, drawing revision and equipment tag.
- Drive details, available feedback signals and automation interfaces.
- Machine envelope, foundations, discharge/scrap handling and access.
- Blades, holders, transmission, guards, drive and controls scope.
- Required acceptance criteria, inspection reports and commissioning responsibility.
Include abnormal operating cases for engineering assessment rather than assuming they are covered by the normal production rate.
Frequently asked questions
Are flying and continuous shears interchangeable?
Not by name alone. Compare the actual mechanism, duty and interfaces. OP lists separate catalogue entries for these enquiries.
Is motor power enough to size a shear?
No. Material, section, speed and cutting duty must also be defined.
Should we quote blades or a complete shear?
Define a component-level supply scope. A blade price cannot be compared directly with a machine-package price.
