Sugar Mill Cane Roller Replacement: Journal, Shell and Bearing RFQ Guide

A sugar mill cane roller replacement should be ordered from an approved roller/shaft drawing and its bearing and drive interfaces, not from cane-crushing capacity alone. Define whether the enquiry covers a shaft, shell, assembled roller or an agreed wider set of components. State the roll position in the mill and the actual design being replaced.

This component-focused guide complements broad sugar mill equipment introductions. Its aim is a usable purchase brief, not a promise that changing one roller will increase extraction.

Establish the roller's identity and scope

Mill position and configuration

Identify the mill unit and the roller's position. Supply OEM/model information, assembly drawings and the latest approved revision. Similar-looking rollers in different positions should not be assumed interchangeable.

Shaft, shell and associated items

Separate the shaft and shell requirements from bearings, liners, scraper components and gear interfaces. Specify which existing parts will be retained. Where a sample is supplied, label known wear so engineering does not treat worn dimensions as nominal dimensions.

Engineering insight: throughput is not a journal dimension

An OEM's Fletcher mill brochure presents roller size, journal dimensions and hydraulic loading as separate design information. Those model-specific values must not be reused as OP specifications or applied to another mill.

For your RFQ, state cane throughput as operating context, then provide the actual load/design data and interfaces. If the plant reports tonnes per day, clarify whether that means tonnes of cane per day, operating hours and seasonal duty. It is not directly equivalent to finished sugar output or an interchangeable roller size.

Buyer resource: cane roller procurement checklist

  • Mill identity, roller position and equipment tag.
  • Approved overall shaft and shell dimensions with drawing revisions.
  • Journal geometry, shoulders, fillets, bearing interfaces and datums.
  • Drive-end connection and associated gear or coupling drawing.
  • Surface/groove requirements and intended finished condition.
  • Material, heat treatment and examination requirements.
  • Existing condition report, known wear and relevant failure history.
  • Scope: shaft only, shell only, assembled roller or associated spares.
  • Required material traceability and dimensional inspection reports.
  • Outage/season start date, quantity and delivery destination.

Ask suppliers to list exclusions and drawing deviations. Avoid substituting a vaguely described equivalent material unless engineering has accepted the exact specification and testing basis.

Coordinate associated spare parts

Bearing liners, head-stock interfaces and scraper arrangements should be reviewed as interfaces, not automatically added as required purchases. Reuse may be appropriate where engineering confirms condition and compatibility. Where several items are procured together, identify who owns the final assembly interface check.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cane TCD rating select a roller?

No. TCD is production context; dimensions, loads and mill configuration establish compatibility.

Are gun metal bearings and bearing liners the same scope?

Not necessarily. Identify the component and assembly drawing, material specification and supplied features.

Can a worn roller sample replace all drawings?

It can assist identification, but may not preserve the intended geometry. Agree how nominal dimensions will be verified.
