Coal Rotary Breaker Trunnion Roller Replacement: A Buyer Checklist

For a coal rotary breaker, replacement support or trunnion rollers should be specified against the actual drum, tyre, shaft and bearing interfaces. The enquiry must also identify the machine correctly: a rotary breaker performs breaking and separation, while a dryer removes moisture. A rotating drum does not make these duties equivalent.

This distinction matters because OP's catalogue has a combined label, Rotary Breaker Dryer Drum. Describe the installed machine's purpose and drawings explicitly instead of treating that catalogue wording as a technical definition.

Understand the equipment before selecting spares

McLanahan's rotary breaker description explains a drum supported on trunnion rollers, with internal breaking/screening elements and axial restraint. That is an OEM design example, not a universal bill of materials for every coal washery.

For a replacement roller, identify the drum support station and the part's position. Record whether the request is for a roller body, roller-and-shaft set or a larger assembly. Keep bearings, housings, seals and thrust components separately listed when included.

Engineering insight: similar symptoms do not identify one failed component

Noise, temperature changes or uneven wear are observations, not a purchase specification. They may justify a system inspection rather than immediate substitution of a roller. Preserve the plant's condition records and ask the responsible maintenance engineer to identify the accepted replacement scope.

McLanahan's support guidance directs alignment work to the machine instructions. Follow the installed equipment's approved procedure; do not use this article to adjust supports, restrain a drum or lubricate moving equipment.

Equipment and duty

  • OEM/model, equipment tag and drum-support position.
  • Breaking, screening or drying duty stated clearly.
  • Normal/peak feed rate in metric t/h, feed size and material details.
  • Existing drawing numbers, revisions and maintenance history.

Interfaces and supply

  • Roller running diameter and width; shaft drawing and datum scheme.
  • Bearing seats, housings, mounting features and sealing arrangement.
  • Associated tyre/drum interface drawings and recorded condition.
  • Bare roller versus assembled supply, with inclusions and exclusions.
  • Material, heat treatment and required examination criteria.
  • Dimensional report, packing, delivery destination and outage schedule.

Create a separate line item for each assembly position. If assemblies appear identical, confirm interchangeability on drawings rather than assuming it from their appearance.

Compare quotations on a common boundary

A new roller body and a complete bearing-mounted assembly cannot be compared only by price per kilogram. Check machining, assembly inspection, supplied hardware and site-work exclusions. Ask for deviations to be clearly identified before accepting a commercial offer.

Frequently asked questions

Does a rotary breaker dry coal?

Not by definition. Breaking/separation and moisture removal are distinct functions; verify the installed machine.

Is support roller another name for trunnion roller?

The terms may refer to a drum-support component, but the actual drawing and assembly arrangement determine equivalence.

Can TPH select the replacement roller?

No. TPH describes process throughput; the accepted mechanical design determines the spare.
