Hot Billet Roller Table Selection: Load, Length and Line Interfaces

A hot billet roller table must be specified for the actual material and handling duty. Provide billet dimensions, weight, temperature, movement requirements and interfaces to adjoining machines. An hourly tonnage figure alone cannot describe the loads or layout of a replacement table.

Start with the table's position in the line

Identify whether the requirement is billet discharge, transfer, removal or another handling operation. Use a marked layout to show receiving and discharge positions, travel direction, elevations and surrounding equipment. OP Engineering Group lists distinct roller table and material-handling equipment entries; their roles should not be conflated.

The general transport role of roller tables is illustrated in Primetals' plate-mill overview. That context does not supply billet-table design ratings.

Engineering insight: equal tonnage can mean different handling

Moving many lighter pieces is not the same enquiry as moving fewer heavier pieces at the same hourly mass flow. The buyer should supply the individual billet envelope and transfer sequence as well as production rate. Where multiple pieces can occupy a section together, identify that operating condition for the designer.

Do not infer roller spacing, shaft size, motor rating or acceptable impact load from throughput or a catalogue photograph.

Buyer resource: table duty and interface checklist

Material and movement

  • Minimum/maximum billet section, length and individual weight.
  • Material temperature and relevant surface/process conditions.
  • Direction, speeds, acceleration/reversing requirements and transfer sequence.
  • Normal/peak production and number of pieces on the table section.

Installation and package scope

  • Approved layout, elevations, foundation and neighbouring-machine interfaces.
  • Roller assembly, bearings, drive, frame and guarding scope.
  • Controls, sensors and electrical installation responsibility.
  • Inspection/acceptance criteria and required documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 6-metre billet injector specify a roller table's capacity?

No. A length label is not a verified table load or throughput rating. Use the approved design and operating duty.

Can a cooling-bed roller table replace a billet discharge table?

Do not assume interchangeability. Their layouts and functions may differ.

Can existing motors and frames be reused?

Only after their interfaces and suitability are assessed. Clearly list retained equipment in the RFQ.
