Pelton Runner Replacement: Head, Flow and Mechanical Interface RFQ Guide

A Pelton runner replacement needs the installed turbine's identity, hydraulic duty, operating range and mechanical interfaces. A megawatt rating or runner diameter alone cannot establish compatibility. Distinguish a like-for-like replacement from a runner redesign intended to change performance.

This guide helps hydropower buyers organize an enquiry. It does not prescribe runner geometry, residual life, repair limits or an efficiency improvement, and it does not establish OP's OEM authorization for any turbine model.

Separate duty data from mechanical fit

Hydraulic and operating context

Provide the head and flow information accepted by the responsible engineer, relevant operating ranges and site conditions. Identify changes from the original design basis. Record available condition and operating history rather than presenting one peak rating as the complete duty.

Released mechanical interfaces

Provide runner assembly, shaft connection and installation-interface drawings. State supplied features and required inspection datums. Related turbine shaft and nozzle information may be necessary for assessment, but does not automatically mean those items are included in the order.

Engineering insight: operating range matters, not only peak output

ANDRITZ's high-head turbine discussion notes changing operating conditions, cyclic loading and hydro-abrasive environments in Pelton rehabilitation. Its proprietary runner profiles and project results are not OP performance claims.

The buyer's practical task is to tell engineering what service the replacement must actually support. A component accepted only against a single headline rating may leave important duty questions unresolved. Any performance-changing design must have an agreed verification basis, not a copied capacity or efficiency statement.

Buyer resource: Pelton runner enquiry checklist

  • Plant/unit identity, turbine OEM and serial/tag details.
  • Approved runner and shaft-interface drawings with revisions.
  • Head/flow data, operating range and rotation/speed information.
  • Existing design records and relevant operating-history changes.
  • Condition reports, identified wear and prior approved repairs.
  • Material, manufacture and required examination/acceptance criteria.
  • Mechanical fit, balance and inspection-document requirements.
  • Like-for-like manufacture versus redesign/assessment boundary.
  • Any performance verification or specialist review required.
  • Handling, preservation, delivery destination and planned outage date.

Give the inspection team identifiable locations and traceable records. Photographs can show observed features, but cannot determine safe remaining life or authorize welding/grinding repairs.

Clarify responsibility before ordering

Identify who approves the hydraulic design, mechanical interfaces and final installation acceptance. Record whether site work and commissioning support are included or excluded. Proposed upgrades and drawing deviations should receive approval before manufacture.

Frequently asked questions

Can plant MW select a runner?

No. Hydraulic duty, geometry and the specific turbine interfaces are required.

Are Pelton and Francis runners interchangeable?

No. They belong to different turbine designs; select against the installed equipment.

Does an erosion photograph prove a runner is repairable?

No. Repair or replacement requires competent assessment and the applicable design/inspection information.
